♡ WHAT IS ORANGE GELÉE? ♡

Orange Gelée was a beloved suncare product produced by now discontinued brand Bain De Soleil® (French for "sun bathing”). It was one of the world’s first suncare products starting its life in France in the 1920’s and becoming immensely popular in the US and the rest of the world throughout the 1960s, 70’s, 80’s and 90s. The product was originally designed to help the wearer achieve a “St Tropez Tan” (as their iconic advertising so illustratively stated), and over the years developed into a line of suncare products with SPF levels ranging from SPF4 through SPF30. The product was known and loved for its distinct orange gel formula, transportive scent, and luxurious feel. Much to the disappointment of many devoted fans, it was discontinued in December 2019.

The Orange Gelée Revival Project is a joint initiative between Vacation® and Orange Gelée fans to bring a revived version of the beloved product back by summer 2024.

♡ WHY IS ORANGE GELÉE SO SPECIAL? ♡

Bain de Soleil’s Orange Gelée was invented in the 1920s when tanning started becoming trendy (some believe Coco Chanel had something to do with that). This was pre-SPF times, so the first iteration of Orange Gelée was a tanning gel that gave skin a glow. By the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, Orange Gelée had amassed a devoted following that included Tom Ford, Michael Kors, Dorinda Medley, and queen of the beach, Pamela Anderson. It was famous for its catchy commercial jingle and luxury, laying-on-a-yacht-in-Saint-Tropez vibes.

♡ HOW DOES THIS COMPARE TO THE ORIGINAL? ♡

The Vacation team put together the Orange Gelée Advisory Committee, a panel of lifelong fans—including one who makes her own dupes and one who makes photo art prints of the original packaging—to weigh in on the final result. "We kicked off with in-depth sessions with each panelist, exploring their personal connection with and memories of Orange Gelée. "They’ve been testing lab samples to determine the optimal color, texture, fragrance, application experience, wearability, and more—all trying to find 'the one.'" After multiple trials, Vacation has nailed the formulation down to the scent, feel and minus the harmful ingredients!
